Prof. Thiago Caon | Formulation Science | Innovator in Pharmaceutical Research Award
Federal University of Santa Catarina | Brazil
Prof. Thiago Caon is a prominent pharmaceutical scientist, academic leader, and innovator whose work has significantly advanced the fields of biopharmaceutics and pharmaceutical technology. He is affiliated with the Federal University of Santa Catarina, where he serves as a faculty member in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and plays a central role in research coordination and postgraduate education. His academic formation integrates pharmacy, biotechnology, and business administration, providing him with a rare interdisciplinary perspective that bridges scientific rigor, translational research, and strategic innovation in healthcare and pharmaceutical development.Prof. Caon’s scientific expertise is strongly rooted in bioavailability enhancement, drug transport across biological membranes, and the development of advanced drug delivery systems. His doctoral and postdoctoral training established a solid foundation in pharmacotechnical strategies aimed at improving the biopharmaceutical performance of challenging drug molecules, particularly those with limited solubility or permeability. Through international research experience at a leading Australian university and collaborative activities at renowned Brazilian institutions, he developed a global outlook on pharmaceutical research and strengthened his methodological expertise in preclinical absorption studies and translational drug development. His research agenda focuses on the investigation of alternative drug administration routes, including transdermal, transmucosal, and sublingual delivery, as well as the design of modified-release systems based on nanotechnology, polymeric films, and hydrogels. Prof. Caon’s work is characterized by a strong emphasis on mechanistic understanding of molecular transport and permeation, supported by advanced in vitro and ex vivo models. These contributions have provided valuable insights for the rational design of safer, more effective, and patient-friendly pharmaceutical products.
