Early Academic Pursuits 🎓

Hamed Abdollahpour began his academic journey with a Bachelor of Science in Aquaculture at the University of Guilan in Sowmeh Sara, Guilan, Iran, from September 2011 to September 2015. His undergraduate project titled “Influence of temperature and food availability on growth and reproductive development in juvenile convict cichlid (Amatitlania nigrofasciata)” highlighted his early interest in fish physiology and aquaculture. Under the mentorship of renowned scholars like Prof. Glen Van Der Kraak and Prof. Bahram Falahatkar, Hamed demonstrated an aptitude for understanding aquatic ecosystems, setting a solid foundation for his future endeavors.

Building upon this, Hamed pursued a Master of Science in Aquaculture at the same institution (2015-2018). His master’s thesis, “Effect of thyroxine injection on female reproductive performance of sterlet sturgeon (Acipenser ruthenus),” further reflected his growing expertise in sturgeon research and hormonal influences on aquatic species. With guidance from Prof. Glen Van Der Kraak and Prof. Bahram Falahatkar, Hamed delved into endocrine studies, establishing himself as a dedicated researcher in aquaculture.

Professional Endeavors 🌍

Hamed is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Aquaculture at the University of Guilan, focusing on the critical role of thyroid hormones in the development and metamorphosis of stellate sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus) larvae. His project is co-supervised by Prof. Deborah Mary Power, Prof. Bahram Falahatkar, and Prof. Mir Masoud Sajjadi, blending expertise in molecular biology, physiology, and aquaculture.

During his research tenure, Hamed conducted a research visit at the Comparative Endocrinology and Integrative Biology Laboratory at CCMAR (Faro, Portugal). Under Prof. Deborah Mary Power’s guidance, he engaged in cutting-edge molecular, histological, and skeletal analysis of various sturgeon species, such as stellate sturgeon, Persian sturgeon, ship sturgeon, beluga sturgeon, and sterlet sturgeon. His work in Portugal underscores his commitment to integrating biotechnology, metagenomics, and epigenetics into aquaculture research.

Contributions and Research Focus 🔬

Hamed Abdollahpour’s research revolves around:

  • Sturgeon Physiology and Endocrinology: Investigating thyroid gland functions in different sturgeon species to understand their role in development and metamorphosis.
  • Molecular Biology and Biotechnology: Conducting advanced molecular analyses, including sequencing, RT-PCR, and histology, to explore hormonal effects on aquatic species.
  • Sustainable Technologies: Collaborating on projects like extending product shelf life in Mediterranean agro-food supply chains using metagenomic studies.
  • Fish Nutrition and Feed Formulation: Designing sustainable and effective feed strategies to improve aquaculture productivity.

These contributions highlight his dedication to advancing sustainable aquaculture and understanding aquatic endocrinology.

Accolades and Recognition 🏆

  • Recipient of support from the Iran National Science Foundation for his project on improving the reproductive performance of sterlet sturgeon through thyroxine hormone injections.
  • Recognized as a promising researcher at CCMAR, where he is a Ph.D. candidate in the field of biotechnology, metagenomics, and epigenetics.
  • Published peer-reviewed journal papers, adding valuable insights to the scientific community in aquaculture and sturgeon physiology.
